FIND YOUR ROLAND KIT BY SERIES
WHICH ROLAND ELECTRONIC DRUM KIT SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
The Roland range lets you move from simple, compact kits to advanced configurations with next-generation modules and pads. However, not every family follows a straightforward progression: VAD focuses on a format closer to an acoustic drum kit, while Quiet Design is specifically designed to reduce physical playing noise.

CHOOSE ACCORDING TO HOW AND WHERE YOU PLAY
For beginners
The TD-02 models are the most straightforward entry point. The TD-02K prioritises compact size and simplicity, while the TD-02KV significantly improves the snare experience with a mesh-head pad.
For home practice
The TD-07 Series adds more editing options, Bluetooth and USB. If you are considering this range, you can also read our Roland TD-07KV test bench review.
New-generation V-Drums
The 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series use the V31, V51 and V71 modules respectively, letting you move from an advanced compact kit to a professional setup.
If you come from an acoustic drum kit
Roland VAD kits use full-size shells and a layout that more closely matches the ergonomics and visual presence of an acoustic drum kit.
If you need to play more quietly
V-Drums Quiet Design is specifically engineered to reduce impact noise and the vibrations transmitted by pads and pedals to the surrounding environment.
For live and studio use
If you need greater connectivity, expansion options and a higher-end configuration, compare the V-Drums 5 and 7 Series in particular, along with their VAD516 and VAD716 equivalents.
RACK, ACOUSTIC DESIGN OR QUIET DESIGN
Alongside the level of the module, one of the most important decisions when buying a Roland kit is the physical format of the setup. TD models use more compact rack-based configurations that are easier to fit into a bedroom or home studio.
VAD takes a different approach. The VAD316, VAD516 and VAD716 combine the V31, V51 and V71 platforms with shells and positioning that are closer to an acoustic drum kit. VAD is therefore not a single performance level, but a different way of configuring a V-Drums kit.
Quiet Design, on the other hand, is specifically focused on reducing physical noise. Roland states that the VQD106 system can reduce playing noise by approximately 75% compared with a conventional V-Drums kit.
WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE BUYING A ROLAND KIT
Kick pedal
Check whether the model includes a kick pedal or only the kick pad. With some ranges, you will need to add your own pedal to complete the setup.
Hi-hat stand
More advanced configurations may use a hi-hat mounted on a conventional stand. Check whether the stand is included or needs to be purchased separately.
Snare stand
Some higher-end kits use a snare that is independent of the rack and may require an additional snare stand.
Available space
A compact TD kit and a full-size VAD require very different amounts of space. Measure the area available, including room for the drum throne, pedals and enough freedom to play comfortably.
Headphones or monitor
For practice, you can connect headphones directly to the module. If you want to hear the kit in a room or play with other musicians, you will need a suitable monitoring system.
Expansion options
If you plan to add cymbals or replace pads in the future, check the available inputs and module compatibility before choosing your kit.
WATCH OUT FOR THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VQD106 AND VQD106PADS
If you are looking for a Roland Quiet Design kit, check exactly which version you are buying. The VQD106 is configured with the TD-07 module, while the VQD106PADS is a pad and rack package designed for use with a compatible module and is not the same complete kit.
This is an important distinction if you are buying your first electronic drum kit and do not already own a module.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ROLAND V-DRUMS KITS
Which Roland kit is best for beginners?
The TD-02 Series is the most straightforward entry point. The TD-02K prioritises a compact format, while the TD-02KV adds a PDX-8 snare with a mesh head. If you want a kit with more room to progress, it is also worth comparing the TD-07.
What is the difference between a Roland TD and a VAD?
TD configurations generally use a more compact rack-based format. VAD, or V-Drums Acoustic Design, uses shells and a physical layout closer to an acoustic drum kit. The VAD316, VAD516 and VAD716 also correspond to different technology levels within the range.
Do all Roland kits include a kick pedal and hi-hat stand?
No. The included equipment varies by model. On more advanced ranges, certain hardware is often purchased separately, so always check the product page before buying.
Which Roland kit should I choose for an apartment?
Alongside the size of the kit, you should consider the physical noise produced by pads and pedals. If this is your main concern, V-Drums Quiet Design was specifically developed to reduce impact noise and vibrations transmitted to the surrounding environment.
What is the difference between V-Drums 3, 5 and 7 Series?
They use the V31, V51 and V71 modules respectively. All three share Roland's new-generation sound platform, but the module features, connectivity and level of the pads and components included with each kit vary as you move up through the range.
