We tested the Yamaha EAD10 with a cajon flamenco.
The Yamaha EAD10 is an electro-acoustic system originally designed for acoustic drums, but in this test, Antonio Coronel takes it to a different terrain: the cajon flamenco.
The idea is simple and very interesting: to see how the EAD10 performs when, instead of placing it on the hoop of a bass drum, it is adapted to a cajon using a piece that simulates that position.
From there, Antonio demonstrates how to connect the system, how to control the module, and how to use different scenes and settings with flamenco rhythms.
WHAT IS THE YAMAHA EAD10
The Yamaha EAD10 is an electro-acoustic module designed to transform an acoustic drum kit into a hybrid digital/electronic system. It allows you to practice, record, and play with an acoustic drum kit, capturing the sound of the kit and applying sampled sounds and digital effects.
The system features 50 preset scenes, 200 user scenes, 757 sounds, a metronome, reverb effects, an auxiliary input, USB, and trigger inputs. It also allows you to work with the free Yamaha app to practice, record, edit, and upload videos of your performances.
In this video, however, Antonio does not use it with a full acoustic drum kit, but with a cajon flamenco: we are not looking at a generic product explanation, but rather a practical test in a flamenco percussion context.
WHY TRY THE EAD10 WITH A FLAMENCO CAJÓN
The interest in this test lies in combining the natural sound of the cajon with the functions of the module: microphones, trigger, scenes, effects, reverb, metronome, recording, and connection with other audio sources.
If you play cajon flamenco, this test helps you understand how the EAD10 can open new sonic possibilities without losing the acoustic essence of the instrument.
HOW TO PLACE THE YAMAHA EAD10 ON THE CAJÓN
The system consists of two main parts:
On one side is the sensor, which in regular use is placed on the hoop of a bass drum in an acoustic drum kit. Here, we adapt it to the cajon using a wooden piece that simulates that hoop. This piece allows you to secure the EAD10 to the cajon in a manner similar to how it would be placed on the bass drum.
On the other side is the controller module, the "little table" from which the main parameters are controlled.
The sensor incorporates two microphones on the top and a trigger. From there, the wiring goes to the main module. Instead of placing it on the bass drum of a drum kit, we transfer that logic to the cajon with a simple and very visual adaptation.
MAIN CONTROLS OF THE MODULE
One of the main features of this module is its ease of use. Although it has several buttons and connections, the basic flow is quite straightforward.
On the front of the module, we find controls such as:
- Power on and off button.
- Reverb control.
- Effect control.
- Trigger control.
- Master volume.
- Control for external music or click.
- Scene selector.
- Configuration menu.
- Output button.
- Metronome button.
- Recording button.
- Automatic setup function.
This allows you to adjust the sound without too much hassle. The EAD10 does not just capture the cajon: it also lets you modify the ambiance, balance the trigger, add effects, and work with different scenes.
AUTOMATIC SETUP AND SOUND ADJUSTMENTS
The Yamaha EAD10 includes an automatic setup function. Once connected and operational, the system analyzes the signal and adjusts the relationship between the microphones and the trigger.
In the test with cajon, we quite like that factory automatic setup. We simply reduce the amount of reverb a bit and also the trigger level in some scenes.
This detail is important because it shows a very realistic use of the module. You don’t need to start from scratch or program everything manually: you can begin with the scenes of the EAD10 and adjust only what you need according to the instrument, the flamenco style, or the sound you want to achieve.
CONNECTIONS OF THE YAMAHA EAD10
On the back, we find the L/R outputs, the A and B inputs for the sensor wiring, auxiliary inputs for DTX modules, triggers, or footswitch, USB for flash memory, USB for connection to a computer, and auxiliary input for external music. On the front, the headphone output.
These connections greatly expand the possibilities of use. You can play along with music, practice with a click, record, trigger sounds, use sequences, or integrate the cajon into a hybrid environment.
For a percussionist, this is particularly useful if you want to take the cajon beyond the traditional acoustic sound and work with layers, effects, or sounds triggered from the instrument itself.
WHAT THE YAMAHA EAD10 BRINGS TO FLAMENCO CAJÓN IN THIS TEST
In this demo, the Yamaha EAD10 offers several possibilities for the cajon flamenco.
- The first is the capturing through microphones. The system picks up the acoustic sound and allows you to work with it from the module.
- The second is the trigger, which allows you to trigger added sounds based on the instrument's response.
- The third is the control of scenes, effects, and reverb, which allows you to modify the character of the sound based on the style, context, or the musical intention.
It also provides practical tools for study and practice: metronome, recording, auxiliary input for playing with music, and connections to expand the system.
In other words, this test shows the EAD10 as a tool to experiment with a cajon hybrid: part of the acoustic sound, but adds control, effects, triggered sounds, and recording possibilities.
DEMO WITH FLAMENCO RHYTHMS
Antonio Coronel gives us several demonstrations with different flamenco rhythms. In each one, he uses a different sound from the module so you can appreciate the possibilities that the EAD10 offers.
In the first, he shows us a tango. With the factory settings, Antonio reduces the amount of reverb and also the effect level on the trigger.
In the second, Antonio plays some alegrías. With the Jingle Kit scene, which is the number 24 of the EAD10, he has reduced the reverb, but maintains a high trigger level because it includes a bass drum with a tambourine:
WHO IT MAY BE INTERESTING FOR
This test may be interesting if you use cajon flamenco and want to explore a broader sound without abandoning the acoustic character of the instrument.
It may also make sense if you need to record yourself, create content, play with a click, practice with backing tracks, or experiment with added sounds from the trigger.
It's important not to understand the Yamaha EAD10 as a system specifically designed for cajon, because its main use is with acoustic drums. But in the video, we show that, with a suitable physical adaptation, Antonio Coronel uses it to work with cajon flamenco and traditional rhythms.
CONCLUSION: A DIFFERENT TEST OF THE YAMAHA EAD10
The Yamaha EAD10 is designed for acoustic drums, but this test with Antonio Coronel shows a different application: using it with a cajon flamenco.
The adaptation is based on placing the sensor over a piece that simulates the hoop of the bass drum, connecting the system to the module, and working with its scenes, reverb, trigger, metronome, recording, and connections.
From there, Antonio tests it with tangos, bulería, soleá por bulería, siguiriya, and alegrías, using different sounds and settings.
The result is an interesting demo if you want to explore new possibilities with the cajon: more control over the sound, layers triggered from the trigger, effects, practice with a click, and recording options.
