The Shells
The Starclassic Maple uses maple, the most popular shell material today due to its warm and clear sound.
For optimal vibration transfer from the head to the shell, the thinner the shell, the better. However, less thickness often means less strength. Instead of simply making shells thinner by using fewer plies, Tama makes the plies thinner and then laminates them into a 6-ply shell. At 5 mm of thickness (bass drum of 8" at 7 mm). This combination results in a shell that is thinner yet actually stronger than others with greater thickness.

Die-cast Hoops
The hoops not only affect tuning, but they also impact the sound. This is why the choice of hoops is so important for Tama's designers, who have opted for pressure-cast zinc hoops, which are made by injecting molten metal into molds. Pressure-cast hoops have more density and are more consistent in shape than laminated hoops, which are made by bending metal plates. Cast hoops make tuning more consistent and easier to achieve because the tension screws always make proper contact with the hoop. Drums equipped with this type of hoops deliver a sharper attack, clear highs, and resonant rim shots that are much more powerful.
