The main feature of Farqin is a hybrid construction divided into three surfaces, each worked through a different hammering or turning technique.
- Raw and hammered bell. Not turned and with a very visible hammering. Provides a drier, more direct response with plenty of character.
- Over-hammered central zone. This is the most controlled part of the cymbal and helps contain the wash, offering good stick definition.
- Finely turned edge. Allows the cymbal to open more easily, generating a cleaner, more flexible response rich in harmonics.
The goal is for you to achieve clearly different sounds depending on where you strike the cymbal.
How does it sound?
The overall character of the Farqin can be defined as:
- Clean and well-articulated sound
- Very musical harmonics, present but pleasant
- Controlled wash in the central area
- More open and expressive edge
- Dry, raw bell with personality
- Good response to both soft and medium dynamics
It sits in an intermediate position: it retains the complex character of a handcrafted Turkish cymbal, but with a fairly organized and usable response. At Tam, we recommend it if you want a versatile cymbal for jazz, pop, funk, recording, or live performance.
Farqin is an interesting series for those who don't want to choose between a dry cymbal and an open one. It offers both responses depending on the area used, making it particularly expressive in larger rides and crashes that are also used to mark patterns.
