Description

The warm, full, and distinctive sound of the Star Maple drum kit makes it a truly personal set that will make you stand out with its spectacular tone and appearance. Like all Star kits, it is handcrafted in Japan.

The shells
Although made from one of the most popular and traditional materials, the Star Maple shells have unique features that set them apart. The ultra-thin 5-ply, 5 mm shells consist of a 2 mm solid wood core sandwiched between crossed laminated plies of 1.5 mm thickness on each side.
Traditional maple shells tend to sound bright and open, but the Star Maple series adds great dynamics, body, and warmth by incorporating a solid wood core. This innovative design gives the Star Maple shells the expected maple tone combined with the distinctive character of solid shell drums, resulting in a truly unique and exceptional sound.

Drumheads
The Tama Star kits come equipped with Remo USA drumheads

  • Tom Toms & Floor Toms: Remo Ambassador Coated batter heads and Remo Ambassador Clear resonant heads
  • Bass drums: Remo Powerstroke 3 Coated batter heads and Remo Fiberskyn Powerstroke 3 Diplomat resonant heads
  • Snares: Remo Ambassador Coated batter heads and Remo Ambassador Hazy snare-side heads

Die-cast hoops
Hoops are a fundamental element for a drum kit’s sound and for tuning ease and stability. The Star toms and snares feature die-cast zinc hoops made by injecting molten metal into molds. Die-cast hoops are denser and more consistently shaped than triple-flanged hoops, which are formed by bending metal plates.
In terms of sound, die-cast hoops provide a sharper attack, greater projection, and a more focused, powerful tone. They also make tuning easier and maintain tuning longer due to their density and consistent shape. Combined with the Star shells, these hoops deliver a very balanced and full-bodied sound.

Hold Tight Washers
The Hold Tight washers are designed to prevent tension rods from loosening. They are stainless steel cup-shaped washers containing a rubber ring.
The vibration caused while playing creates a gap between the tension rods and hoops, which can cause the rods to loosen over time. The rubber rings in the Hold Tight washers help absorb this vibration impact and keep the rods in constant contact with the hoops to prevent loosening.

Minimal shell contact
Every piece of hardware that touches the shells affects the drum’s resonance and sound. When developing the Star line, every detail was carefully considered to maximize resonance and optimize tone.
The new lug design for the Star series looks stunning and features an extremely low-mass construction to minimize shell contact. The bass drum claws follow the same principle by "floating" on the bass drum hoop surface. Star drums also feature a printed veneer and a small wood vent hole that further reduce shell material weight and enhance resonance and tone.

Bass drum legs
The bass drum legs adopt the same concept as the floor tom legs. Since the bass drum legs absorb the horizontal impact from the pedal, properly absorbing this impact is crucial for the natural resonance of the bass drum shell and for a comfortable pedal feel. That’s why they’re designed with soft, heavy rubber feet.
There’s another important consideration. Most bass drum legs have metal spikes at the ends to prevent the bass drum from moving during play. This is important for many drummers, so to maintain impact absorption while using metal spikes, the Star bass drum legs feature a unique two-piece construction. The spike is separated from the rest of the leg by rubber, which absorbs impact without transferring it to the spike, allowing the bass drum shell to vibrate and resonate more freely.

Floor tom legs
Generally, floor toms are placed vertically and struck downward. This means the floor tom legs receive this downward impact directly. The Star floor tom leg tips feature a special soft, hollow rubber that helps absorb this impact in a way that enhances the tom’s natural resonance and sustain.

Quick-Lock tom mounts
The "Quick-Lock" tom mounts equipped on the Super Resonant mounting system and Star floor toms have some very innovative features.
First, as the name suggests, these mounts allow for quick and easy setup and teardown. But their special and unique feature is that once the tom is placed on a tom mount or floor tom leg, there’s no need to set and adjust separate memory locks to preserve positioning. Simply sliding the switch on the tom mount splits it into two parts. When the tom is removed, the "memory lock" part remains on the tom mount or floor tom leg. This keeps the positioning saved, making the next setup fast and easy.
These Quick-Lock tom mounts also provide additional acoustic benefits. Following the same principle of reducing vibration transfer from the drums to the tom mounts or floor tom legs, these mounts also use rubber coatings to further isolate the drums and improve resonance.

Bearing edges
The vibration produced when striking a drum is transferred to the shell through the contact point between the head and the shell. Therefore, the shape of the bearing edges is one of the most important factors in a drum’s sound.
Star drums feature bearing edges as shown in the diagram. Their peak is rounder than Tama’s traditional bearing edge. This rounded peak provides more contact between the head and the shell, allowing vibration to transfer more effectively from the head to the shell. Additionally, the maximum edge position is 3.5 mm from the shell’s outer surface, further improving the contact between the head and the drum.

Interior finish
Through a time-intensive process, the bearing edges and interiors of all Star drum shells are meticulously hand-finished with oil to achieve a luxurious look. Star Bubinga shells feature an inner Cordia layer with an oil finish, while Star Maple shells have maple interiors finished with oil.

Super Resonant mounting system
To maximize the natural resonance of the drum kit, toms need to be mounted with minimal tension on the shells and hoops. Star drums feature a mounting concept called the Super Resonant Mounting System.
This system has three contact points on the drum. Two are located on the mass hoop (A and B), and one is located on the lower hoop (C). These three points create the largest theoretical triangle possible on the drum. The two contact points on the mass hoop (A and B) support the drum’s weight vertically. The third contact point (C) supports the horizontal weight of the drum once the angle is set. According to physics, the farther this third point is, the less support is required to set an angle. Therefore, by placing the third contact point as far as possible on the lower hoop using the support arm, we were able to drastically reduce shell and hoop tension and increase natural resonance.
If the drum is tilted beyond a certain angle, which should only apply to a small minority of drummers, this mounting system works slightly differently. If a drum tilts beyond a certain angle, the lower hoop no longer contacts or rests on the lower contact point (C). In this case, a different contact point (D) located on the batter hoop comes into play. Although the triangle formed by these three points is much smaller, it doesn’t increase tension on the mass hoop due to the drum’s angle. Thus, the drum’s natural resonance is still preserved in this scenario.

To maximize drum resonance, it’s very important to prevent vibration from the shells transferring to the tom mounts. Therefore, in addition to the engineering described above, Tama also uses rubber at every contact point between the shell and the mounting system, which helps isolate the shells and greatly reduces vibration transfer.

Inlay option
Star drums come standard with a beautiful central wood inlay on the outside of the shells. Tama Star also offers the option of inlay inside the Sound Focus Rings or no inlay at all.

Bass drum hoop color option
Bass drums come standard with matching wood hoops. You can also choose a natural matte or dark brown matte finish for the hoops, available for most drum colors.

About Tama Drums

What more can be said about Tama besides the fact that for decades it has been the preferred brand for the most "hardcore" drummers? For several years now, Tama has continued to maintain its classic models for rock and metal but has expanded its range of drum kits with models perfect for all types of styles, in addition to offering options for every budget. Artists from diverse styles such as Peter Erskine, Stewart Copeland, Robert Sput, Simon Phillips, and Mike Portnoy enjoy the Tama sound. There must be a reason for that.
Additionally, this brand manufactures a wide range of hardware and accessories for drums with some legendary names like the Iron Cobra.
