The Shell
Manufactured with 7 plies and 6 mm thickness, the Classic Maple shell is designed to deliver optimal resonance and tone. Its central three-ply core (laminated in a horizontal/vertical/horizontal grain pattern at 2.4 mm thickness) is sandwiched between the inner and outer two-ply panels through Ludwig's patented RFST molding process.
To enhance stability across the drum, all Ludwig USA shells are made using radio frequency technology. Employing a process that utilizes historic molds from the late 1960s, the unique RFST bonding system, combined with a specialized and tested adhesive, bonds each ply evenly across the entire shell surface. This process is truly a key ingredient in creating the "Ludwig Sound" in every shell they produce.

Bearing Edge
The bearing edge cut is a crucial part of a drum’s sound, and Ludwig has perfected the ideal profile.
Each drum’s bearing edge is cut at a 45º angle within 1/16" from the outer edge. This profile is critical for achieving a wide tuning range and maximum sustain. The edge is hand-sanded by skilled craftsmen to ensure a smooth finish. The uniform, flat surface provides a perfect seating for the drumhead—the final touch to complete the unmistakable Ludwig sound.
